FAQS & Tips

FAQ #1 - What's the difference between Kung Fu and other martial arts?

On the simplest level, Kung Fu is from China, and specifically my style of Hung Ga is from Southern Shaolin Temple in China. While every style of Kung Fu/martial arts is different, Hung Ga focuses on strong stances and excellent internal power; additionally we are well known for our Shaolin Five Animal form, as well as the Tiger-Crane fighting form.

FAQ #2 - Do I need to get fit before starting Kuna Kung Fu?

You absolutely do not need to get fit BEFORE starting Kung Fu training! Any fitness you have helps, of course, but this is not like the movies, and no one is trying to break you. Everybody works within their own limitations; and the right training improves those limitations, which is why Kung Fu is so beneficial for everyone!

FAQ #3 - Can Kuna Kung Fu help me lose weight?

Kung Fu improves the practitioner's health in almost every way, with proper focus and instruction. So yes, many people have used Kung Fu training to meet their weight loss goals, and have found other benefits in the process.

FAQ #4 - I'm nervous about trying Kuna Kung Fu. Is the environment strict or welcoming and encouraging?

My teaching style is not so strict as to be called regimented or military-like. While there is a fair amount of focus and effort that is expected of students, we certainly don't yell at each other or apply other negative motivation techniques. Instead, we try to build a strong sense of community and trust; after all, who wouldn't be friends with someone they've sweated and struggled with? When the time is right we are focused and hard-working and disciplined, and when the time is right we are relaxed and chatty and even silly!

FAQ #5 - Can Kuna Kung Fu help my mental health?

Many people find the benefits of Kung Fu training extend far beyond simple strength. Often, people enjoy the results of their hard work: increased capabilities, self control, awareness, and access to parts of ourselves we previously considered unreachable. Having these benefits, and knowing they are from your efforts and they are under your control, often does give people the opportunity to improve their mental health.

FAQ #6 - Will Women's Self Defense actually help me defend myself if needed?

Women's Self Defense is a complex topic, and it is because every woman's circumstances are different. Other classes try to fix the problem in a number of ways that I do not find particularly helpful, according to the women I know and the women I've taught. Instead, I use my experience and the experience of women's real experiences to shape a class that more accurately reflects not just the circumstances a woman is likely to face, but also a solution she is likely to be able to employ. Bottom Line – If you can't apply it, the “solution” is worthless, and I am always improving my classes so that doesn't happen.
